      Not many people look forward to visiting the dentist and given the amount of increased sugar consumed in the average diet, the battle to maintain good oral health is tougher than ever. Essential oils provide us with a practical and natural way to support overall oral health. Many oils which are antibacterial and antifungal in nature can help with complaints such a plaque, tooth ache, gum disease and more. Here are the top essential oils for oral health

      Melaleuca

      An incredibly practical and useful essential oil to have in any household, Melaleuca when applied topically on gums or taken internally in a capsule can help avoid tooth decay and cavities. Along with good oral hygiene, the antiseptic and antibacterial properties of Melaleuca essential oil make it a great choice for maintaining great gum health. Gargling with melaleuca is also a helpful remedy for a sore throat or inflamed tonsils.

      Frankincense

      Frankincense is an incredibly restorative and supportive essential oil which is particularly useful for wound healing and pain. Applying it topically is beneficial when dealing with sores, cuts or mouth ulcers. Headaches and teeth grinding can be eased by using Frankincense oil and it also helps with bleeding gums, infection, tooth sensitivity and toothaches.

      Lemon

Applying lemon essential oil topically is a great remedy for mouth ulcers and applying it to your toothbrush helps to keep it clean and fresh. Using lemon topically can benefit tender/sore gums and gargling with it can help fight plaque.

      Peppermint

      An ideal breath freshener, Peppermint essential oil has anti-inflammatory properties which also makes it a good choice for reducing swelling and inflammation. Gargling and drinking peppermint helps combat bad breath and is a good alternative to sugary chewing gums and mints.

      ‘Mouthwash’

      5 drops peppermint

      5 drops melaleuca

      2 drops myrrh

      3 drops clove

      Mix oils with 100ml filtered water in a glass/jar and mix well before use.
