The ability to focus can be challenging for individuals of any age but can prove particularly difficult for children. These days our senses are constantly bombarded with images and sounds, often making it difficult to switch off the “noise” of modern living. Technology, the foods we eat and a busier pace of life can be just some of the factors contributing to a decline of our attention span.

Essential oils are powerful tools for effectively improving our focus, concentration level and memory. Whether it is to elevate mood, ease tension or to feel more alert, using essential oils can help bring focus to a busy day. One of the best ways to experience the powerful benefits of essential oils and to improve brain function is to diffuse them aromatically or inhale their scent. This is a simple and quick way to initiate a quick physical and emotional response in the brain.

Using the following essential oils can be very effective for achieving mental clarity and can be of huge benefit in a learning environment. Just like adults, children can often be affected by daily stresses so it is important to create a positive and happy learning atmosphere for them.

Top Oils for Children’s focus

Rosemary

Applying rosemary topically under the nose or across the head, aids in improving memory and mental performance. Diffusing rosemary while children are doing homework is an ideal way to combat mental fatigue after a long day of learning. It is also a wonderful oil for emotional balance so an ideal aroma to spread around a busy house.

Lemon

Lemon essential oil aids concentration and also reduces stress. It mixes wonderfully with Rosemary making it an ideal blend to diffuse during periods of study. Simply inhaling lemon essential oil from the bottle can elevate mood, balance emotions and improve concentration.

Orange & Peppermint

One of my favourite combinations, combining these two oils creates a ‘focus blend’ which is both refreshing and a wonderful mood boost. Spritzing this mix on a shirt collar or inhaling the blend at the beginning of the school day helps children to start the day feeling alert and happy.

Vetiver

Diffusing Vetiver aromatically or applying it to the feet, spine and back of neck can be an effective way to improve concentration. It is the ‘Oil of Tranquillity’ which when blended with lavender is helpful for ADHD and overall focus.

Frankincense

Frankincense is renowned for easing tension and assisting with focus. It is commonly used when practicing meditation and is also known for its antidepressant properties. This is an ideal essential oil to use for children who are easily distracted, bored, restless or hyperactive.

Kids Concentration Protocol

  • 2 drops wild orange
  • 2 drops Vetiver

Diffuse or spritz on collar of school shirt.

When selecting essential oils it’s important to choose 100% pure essential oils for the safest and most effective health benefits. Only certified pure therapeutic grade oils should be taken internally or used neat on the skin. Always dilute essential oils with carrier oil if applying topically to children.

Essential oils can be used aromatically to affect mood and open airways; topically for quick absorption into the body through the skin, and internally for immune & digestive support.

Stress or Anxiety crop

Modern living can be chaotic at times and technology, social media and the feeling we need to be constantly available or ‘plugged in’ can raise anxiety levels and leave us feeling emotionally stressed out. A recent study from the University of Glasgow found that social media & the need to be constantly available online can cause depression, anxiety and decrease sleep quality for teenagers.

Nourishing the body with the right foods, taking time away from technology and meditation are just some of the ways we can combat raised anxiety levels. To help experience healthy moods, natural plant remedies can also prove really beneficial as our sense of smell has a strong influence on our emotions. Inhaling essential oils provides the fastest route into the body where they can then have a significant benefit on our mood. Diffusing essential oils (small device that disperses essential oils into the air) is an effective way to inhale them and it is also a chemical free alternative to air using fresheners.

There are so many oils to choose from to help manage mood. The following are a few of the top oils to help with anxiety:

Wild Orange

Uplifting and invigorating, wild orange is commonly used for emotional balance. Applying wild orange to pulse points or simply smelling this fresh oil can help with anxiety and nervousness. It also contains powerful antioxidants to support overall health and is an ideal oil to use for energising the mind and body.

Bergamot

Bergamot is delicate citrus oil used to reduce tension and stress. One of the top uses for Bergamot is insomnia and using it topically or aromatically can help to balance emotions. Diffusing this elevating oil is ideal way to help the body when feeling anxious or when stress levels are high

Frankincense

Frankincense is often referred to as the ‘King’ of oils and has been used for thousands of years by nearly all ancient cultures. It is renowned for its healing properties and is commonly used to reduce inflammation and to relieve anxiety and chronic stress. Frankincense oil helps to promote feelings of peace which makes it an ideal oil to inhale or diffuse when feeling anxious. Applying some oil topically under the nose and on the back of the neck can help ease tension and bring wonderful focus to meditation.

Lavender

Lavender essential oil is hugely popular and known to help with all things calming. Rubbing lavender over the heart and inhaling it can help with anxiety. It is an ideal oil to use when stress or anxiety are causing sleep problems.

Essential oils can offer practical, effective and powerful benefits for our emotional wellbeing. Using the power of plants to reduce stress, anxiety and tension is a safe and effective way to help safeguard our mental health.

When I first began using essential oils I was immediately drawn to peppermint. It is both refreshing and uplifting and to this day it is still my firm favourite. Peppermint is a universally loved essential oil, well-known for its medicinal benefits. Along with Lavender it is probably one of the most versatile and commonly used oils globally.

The peppermint plant is a hybrid of watermint and spearmint and was first described in 1753 by Carl Linnaeus. Peppermint can also be found in Greek mythology and the ancient Romans would bind the plant to their crowns to stimulate the mind. A good quality peppermint oil will have a high menthol content and can be used to help alleviate stomach upset and to clear sinuses.

How do I use peppermint essential oil? My top 10 uses

  1. Relieves headaches

Rub a little on your temples for pain relief

  1. Improves mental focus

Mix peppermint with wild orange & inhale deeply to feel more focused and alert

  1. Soothes digestive complaints

Rub some on your tummy or take a drop internally if feeling bloated or unwell.

  1. Natural breath freshener

Who needs chewing gum when you have peppermint to freshen bad breath

  1. Energy booster

Before a workout, inhale peppermint or add it to water to feel energised and refreshed.

  1. Sinus aid

When congested or struggling with allergies, inhale peppermint to clear sinuses

  1. Cool down

Peppermint has a wonderful cooling effect so when dealing with a fever or feeling overheated; apply peppermint topically to reduce a temperature.

  1. Anti-Nausea

Add a drop or two of peppermint to water or place a drop in your mouth if feeling nauseous. Great for when you feel car sick!

  1. Muscle Pain

Peppermint can help relax muscles so mix it with coconut oil and rub into calf muscles after a workout or a long day on your feet.

  1. Cravings

Stop the munchies by inhaling peppermint or placing a drop under your tongue

*Beat the afternoon slump with this*

‘Focus Blend’

-15 drops peppermint

– 20 drops wild orange

Combine in a 15ml glass roller bottle. Fill the remainder of the bottle with a carrier oil such as coconut or almond oil. Apply the mixture to the back of your neck, base of your skull, forehead & temples for an energising boost!
