If you are looking to escape the outside world in the run up to Christmas then Carton House is the perfect place to spend an afternoon.

Last week I took my Mum to The Spa at Carton House and we indulged in an afternoon of pampering and relaxation. My mum is my rock and she is always by my side. For the past few years her love and support has enabled me to study and grow into a new career in wellbeing so what better way to thank her than with a relaxing treatment and lunch. My mum is difficult to buy for but her favourite thing in the world is a massage. I will say though she is a tough critic but as she walked into the relaxation room after her treatment she was smiling from ear to ear. She said Nancy was one of the best therapists she has had and she felt great.

RELEXOLOGY CONNECTS BODY, MIND AND SPIRIT

I was drawn to the reflexology session and my therapist Alla was excellent. Her knowledge and intuition was spot on and she picked up on everything going on in my body. Reflexology is an ancient art of healing the body and mind. After an invigorating foot scrub and an application of hot towels to the feet and legs, gentle pressure is then applied to specific points on the feet to establish a healthy flow of energy within the body and to encourage your body’s own natural healing system. It’s an incredibly relaxing treatment and Alla picked up on my digestive issues and also on my back pain. The treatment helped me to focus on healing and her aftercare plan helped me to fine tune my daily habits to what my body currently needs.

The Carton House spa is one of the nicest I have visited. The beds in the treatment rooms are not only heated but also very wide and incredibly comfortable. This makes all the difference for me as it really enhances your treatment experience. The relaxation room (below) is so spacious as you can see in this picture. We ate sorbet and fresh fruit and snuggled under the beautiful blankets truly appreciating the time alone. After our treatments we relaxed in the pool, steam room and sauna.

A HISTORICAL TREASURE

Carton House is steeped in 835 years of history and you can also step behind the scenes for a tour of the house too. You can avail of the stunning 1,100-acre grounds and take a walk in nature after your treatment. Connecting with nature, especially if you live in the city is so important as it helps us to connect with our spiritual self and truly appreciate the beauty of the world we live in. As a daily mindfulness practitioner I love taking a moment each day to appreciate my surroundings. At Carton House this is incredibly easy to do.

My mum loved the room we ate lunch in and in this picture you can see (above) the old kitchen that was used by the staff of the house many years ago.

The menopause is a natural stage in your life and there a number of top tips to help you prepare and pass through this transition easily and comfortably

Symptoms that your body is preparing for the menopause can start in the mid-40s (or earlier) and can include changes in the frequency or heaviness of your periods, premenstrual tension, mood swings and irritability. As your body produces less and less oestrogen, other symptoms may appear, including aching joints, depression, lack of energy, joint pains, declining libido, weight gain, headaches and, most commonly, hot flushes and night sweats

We go through the menopause because as women we literally run out of eggs.

Not all women have a miserable time, symptoms can vary and some women sail through while others can get symptoms. Hot flushes and night sweats are among the most common and uncomfortable symptoms and their frequency and severity can vary from woman to woman.  Certain foods and situations can trigger some hot flushes and these can include spicy foods, caffeinated drinks, alcohol and stressful situations.

Phytoestrogens can help alleviate menopausal symptoms so make sure you include plenty in your diet. Phytoestrogens are found in almost all fruit, vegetables and wholegrains but they are most beneficial when they are found in legumes, such as soya, lentil, peas and chickpeas. A good phytoestrogen supplement is NHP’s MenoHerbal Support from good health food shops.

The menopause is a time of change and your female hormones are going to be fluctuating up and down as you go through this stage until you come out the other side and into the postmenopause, when your hormones will stabilise.  The more gradually you go through the menopause, the less hormone fluctuations you experience and the easier the transition.  What you eat now to prepare yourself for this stage can make the difference between having a difficult or easy menopause.

You would follow the same dietary recommendations even if you are on HRT because you want to keep yourself as healthy as possible and also there will come a time when you need to come off HRT.

I also always recommend that women take a good-quality multivitamin and mineral to prepare for and during the menopause.  This supplement should contain vital nutrients for bone health, good levels of antioxidants to help slow down the ageing process, and other important vitamins and minerals, such as the B vitamins and chromium, to help keep blood-sugar levels balanced.  It should also contain calcium, magnesium, manganese, boron and vitamin D3 (see NHP’s MenoSupport multivitamin and mineral).   Also take a good Omega 3 fish oil supplement as deficiencies of this nutrient can look like symptoms that may occur leading up to the menopause and beyond such as dry skin, lifeless hair, cracked nails, fatigue, depression, dry eyes, lack of motivation, aching joint, difficulty in losing weight and forgetfulness.

The risk of osteoporosis increases with age especially after the menopause when oestrogen levels decline. The more you can do to work on prevention the better.

Finally, as well as eating a healthy, bone building diet a regular exercise programme is crucial for warding off osteoporosis. This is because the more physically active we are, the more bone we will build. Aim for a minimum of 30 minutes exercise five times a week.

Women can now live 30 to 50 years past the menopause and you want to live those years in good health and free from symptoms.  Preparing for the menopause by eating well, taking appropriate supplements and exercising, your health will improve, which enhances the quality of your life.  Good nutrition together with the right supplements, enables your  body to adjust to the changes at the menopause automatically and keeps your skin and hair soft, minimises aching joints and stiffness, slows the ageing process, controls weight naturally without dieting, maintains libido and helps to prevent osteoporosis, heart disease and cancer.

Qualified therapists use their extensive knowledge of Anatomy and Physiology to carry out Massage treatments. The massage is the manipulation of the soft body tissue that is used to enhance a person’s health and well- being.

Massage Beach Lady

Most of you will remember when you were younger and perhaps fell or hurt yourself, having your Mother or Father hold you, or rub the injured part of the body, “to make it feel better”. Touch is a huge part of healing in general and Massage is one form of healing as well as being a relaxation and stress relieving treatment.

There are many different types of Massage and each one works in its own unique way. For example:

Aromatherapy: The therapist uses essential oils and it is the oil as well as the massage technique that’s work with the individual to relieve stress, provide relaxation etc.
Sports Massage: Will usually be concentrated on a particular part of the body that is causing a problem.

Holistic Massage: Your therapist will first sit down with you and discuss your Lifestyle in detail, then they will run through a questionnaire to determine if a Massage is suitable for you or not. They will discuss your Lifestyle with you and suggest numerous ways that you can improve or change things to make your Life better, this combined with the Massage will have a more effective outcome.

Massage is suitable for most people but there are certain contraindications when a person should not have a Massage. It is advisable, particularly if you have a Medical condition to first get advice or written permission from your Doctor or discuss this with your Therapist before booking an appointment.

Some Contraindications:

  • Fever.
  • Cardio Vascular conditions.
  • High blood pressure.
  • Contagious diseases.
  • Recent surgery.

Some people are unsure how the treatment is carried out and often have some undue concerns. Before the Massage begins the therapist will leave you to undress in private then you will lay down on a plinth or massage table. During the Massage you will be discreetly covered by towels or a cover and only the part of the body that is being massaged will be exposed as the therapist begins to oil your body and begin the treatment.

The Massage relaxes muscle tissue, which diminishes tightness or tension in the muscle. It improves circulation pushing oxygen into cells and helps to eliminates any toxins or waste from the body. There are several benefits to be gained from having regular Massage treatments. Massage can help to relieve chronic pain and having a therapeutic Massage can enhance your overall sense of wellness.

Massage Towel

  • Relieves headaches.
  • Reduces anxiety.
  • Insomnia.
  • Back, and neck pain.
  • And much more.

When Massage relieves stress, it helps the body, as a whole. It will also increase your self-esteem, help you to relax and bring clarity to a troubled mind. It has so many benefits on an emotional and physical level. It is appropriate for adults and children alike and is also suitable for pregnant women. (unless otherwise advised by a doctor)
It is so much more than “Just a massage”, it is a whole life change with wide spread benefits.

Beauty Salon Wicklow - Eden Beauty Group Wicklow Town, Laser Hair Removal, Buy Gift Vouchers Online, Facials, Waxing, Microderma

Last week I headed out to see Susan Fox in Eden Beauty group for an ocean miracle treatment using Casmara skincare.

When Susan and I decided to collaborate she sent me out some of the Casmara products to try. I started using them at the same time as I gave up coffee and sugar. This meant that I was detoxing so the products would really be put to the test.

I found the Casmara products gentle and lightweight which was perfect for the hot weather we have been experiencing. I used the 3 n 1 marine cleanser (€20), the hydra lifting serum (€40) and the hydra lifting firming moisturising cream.(€36)

THE TREATMENT

I have been suffering breakouts recently as my body and mind has been going through changes. I had quite a few blocked pores and I was delighted when Susan suggested extraction. There are only a few exceptional beauticians that can do extractions well and Susan is one of them.

casmara, eden beauty group, susan fox, facial, ocean miracle treatment, cleansing, natural skincare, skin health, beauty, natural products, skincare, health, wellness, holisitic health, wicklow townBefore starting the Casmara Ocean Miracle treatment Susan did a deep cleanse and then straight into the extraction! There was minimal pain and I felt quite excited at the prospect of my blocked pores being freed!! After the pain was sheer pleasure and their was a foaming mask, wakame kelp and green tea to ensure a sensory delight.

STEPS OF CASMARA OCEAN MIRACLE TREATMENT

  1. Cleansed with Green Tea Cleanser. This is a fabulous product as it contains green tea and silk proteins so it hydrates while cleansing. It is 3 products in 1. A cleanser when used on wet skin and then an exfoliator when used on dry skin with a cloth or brush. It also is an eye make up remover and you do not need a toner!

  1. Extraction. (Needs no description lol)

  1. Applied Oxygenating foaming mask. This felt amazing as it foamed on y skin. It is a fabulous treatment for stimulating cell activity and infuses the cells with pure oxygen with stimulates cell activity and makes them more responsive and better able to absorb the products applied after it.

  1. Susan applied an enzymatic peel; this is a peel that does not scrub or overwork the skin but rather gently melts off dead skin cells. It contains fucogel which is extremely hydrating, it contains olive oil and stops you getting that tight dry feeling you sometimes get after a peel or scrub.

  1. After stripping and peeling the skin you need to feed it so Susan massaged in an ampoule with Sea plasma and Threalose, which is a seaweed that holds it’s moisture for hours when the tide goes out and it is exposed on the rocks. It keeps moisture locked into your skin.

  1. A serum was applied that has Juvenessence in it. This slows down the cells in your body changing laminine (which is a protein) to Progerin, which is what causes cells to age. This means that this facial actually works at cell level to slow down the ageing process.

  1. A cream with more Wakame was applied. Wakame has been proven in clinical studies to activate 14 genes stimulating collagen, Elastin and HA (firming) in the skin.
  1. casmara, eden beauty group, susan fox, facial, ocean miracle treatment, cleansing, natural skincare, skin health, beauty, natural products, skincare, health, wellness, holisitic health, wicklow townLast but not least was the mask. It is made up of pure Wakame Kelp it lowers your body temperature by 6-8 degrees and dries from the outside in pushing products deeper into the skin. It also helps reduces any inflammation and sooth the skin. I loved this part and as you can see it also covered my eyes and I felt a deep feeling of rest at this stage of the treatment.
  1. At the end a moisturizer was applied, which had a combination of all the key ingredients in the facial. My skin felt fresh and not a sign of the extraction anywhere.

THE AFTERMATH

Over the next few days I felt my skin brighten. I had a few breakouts, which I expected as my chin in particular had been very badly clogged and needed a deep cleanse. I headed to a movie premiere with James on Sunday and as you can see from the photo below my skin looked fresh and everyone was asking had I had Botox??? The answer is no I have never had any treatment like that.
