In this video I’m chatting to Maria Donlon from Life Cleanse about choosing the right juicer. I have used a centrifugal juicer for many years and I have a separate Wheatgrass juicer but more recently I have moved to a masticating juicer that has everything in one.
Maria uses and recommends masticating juicers for the following reasons:
  1. Maximise nutrient and enzyme preservation – the slow rotation of the auger in a masticating juicer cold presses the juice and minimises oxidation which help to preserve the nutrient and enzyme content. Put simply because you are introducing as little heat and oxygen as possible you will destroy as few nutrients and enzymes as possible.
  2. Versatility – I juice lots of greens and a masticating juicer will juice leafy greens and wheatgrass whereas a centrifugal juicer can’t deal with these. In addition to juice most masticating juicers make seed and nut pates and butters, healthy ice creams and baby food
  3. Efficiency – The slow process of cold pressing the juice extracts more liquid from the ingredients thus minimising food waste, and saving money on food shopping over time. This is clearly visible from how dry the pulp is coming out of a masticating juicer versus a centrifugal one. They are also much easier and quicker to clean.
  4. Durable – Most masticating juicers are built to last. All of the masticating juicers that Life Cleanse sells come with a 10 year warranty

Today I’m chatting to Jennifer Rock from Yonka Skincare about their philosophy and how as a brand they are very much results driven

Jennifer’s key points about Yonka:

  • It can take as little as 26 seconds for a product applied to the top layer of the skin to be absorbed into our body so we need to truly think about what ingredients we have in our bathroom cabinet that are then being applied to our skin
  • YonKa philosophy is not to create short term addictions but to cause measurable changes within the skin in the safest possible manner
  • We are based on the ‘quintessence’ which is a powerful signature blend of essential oils.
  • The essential oils powers are undeniable; regenerating, rejuvenating, healing, hydrating nourishing antibacterial to name but of a few of its core benefits
  • The majority of our ranges have these ingredients within, each offer various levels dependant on the skin type/ concern in question
  • We also channel vitamins, essential fatty acids, marine extracts, phyto ingredients in.
  • We believe in truly researching ingredient, securing the finest quality ( thus the price point) and not compromising their benefit at any stage of manufacturing
  • YonKa is a natural yet results driven range. Dubbed ‘ when biochemistry meets beauty, or ‘ naturally results driven’
  • We were created by biochemists, used in hospitals for burns and are truly regenerative yet work to respect the skin
  • For more information on Yonka visit Renaissance Skincare

How would you describe your lifestyle?

I would consider my lifestyle a really exciting one. I’m really proud to say that I live an extraordinary life with lots of excitement, adventure, challenge, love, fun and really good people. Since I have started working with http://pureresultsbootcamp.com/ & Kathryn Thomas, I have found that I really enjoy what I do, and that lots of other exciting opportunities are coming up, which are all in line with how I want my future to pan out.

What’s your favorite food? Naughty or nice.

I love home cooked food (something simple like a homemade turkey bolognaise) or a stir fry with lots of vegetables. I especially like these after being away from home for a few days. I’m also very lucky that Jen is always experimenting with new foods for her Nutrition Workshops so I get to try new and exciting foods (and some treats of course). I also love dark chocolate and a big treat for me is a double chocolate muffin (gluten free of course).

Do you exercise and if so what do you do to keep fit?

I exercise nearly every day, I’m a strong advocate of everyone getting some exercise, even if it’s a 20min walk, everyday. It’s also good to have a rest day from intense exercise at least once per week. I’m lucky that training is part of my job with Pure Results Bootcamp and I also have my own classes and clients.

I go through phases of my own training. I focus on the next event that I want to complete like a 10-mile road race, a marathon or an adventure race and base my activity to suit. It gives me a good variation and I like that. I love to do a marathon every 2-3 years so that when it comes around again I’m really hungry to do as well as I can. I really enjoy the training and lead up then.

How do you find balance in your day-to-day life?

I think it’s all about planning and preparation. If I’m very busy, I’ll try to get some exercise done in the morning and I’m tending to prefer the mornings now for exercise. This may mean getting up really early but that’s ok once I get enough sleep. I do get 7 hours quality sleep most nights. To keep a balance, I also like to have some quiet time for meditation, just 10-15 mins in the morning does me.  I also like to have some time everyday to spend with Jen to catch up on what’s going on or just to chill out.

How do you manage stress in your life? Do you meditate? Have you ever tried it?

Yes, a good day for me is a day when I have meditation as part of it. I also recently started a new technique called priming. This really gets me in the zone! A little stress can be good when it’s causing me to go outside my comfort zone. I’m lucky that I don’t think I have much stress in my life at the moment. I heard recently that when you are very busy doing something you don’t like, its stressful, but when you love what you do, being busy is just “living with passion!”.

People often set goals or intentions as they go through life. Is this something you do?
Definitely, I have a workshop that I give which is based on Goal Setting and creating Habits for Success. I always set intentions as to how I want to approach something and how I want things to work out for me. I believe it’s good to have small and big goals but the intensity or focus of these may change. It’s good to sit back and reduce the high intensity at times too.

How do you unwind after a busy day?

I enjoy getting out for a walk with Jen where we can catch up on the day’s event. I also love to get to the pool and a few minutes in a Jacuzzi is always welcomed! A good comedy always helps to switch off the brain also.

It’s the weekend, what do you do for fun?

Fun is based around exercise a lot for me. I really enjoy events like races and get a great buzz from them. The weekend is also time to catch up with family and relax with them.

What’s your top health tip for our readers?
Be active and eat well. These bodies of ours were built to move and they will perform better when they do move. Sometimes it takes a big kick-start to change a habit, and that’s what’s great about Pure Results Bootcamp, as it provides that Massive Action to get the ball rolling. The momentum for this can then last for a long time. There is lots of wisdom available on exercise and nutrition, which is provided at Pure Results, and I’m very proud to be a part of this amazing team

Finish the sentence – Being complete for me means…

Being of great service by preparing well, working hard, celebrating and recovering….

Sometimes in life we forget to smile, smile at all the misfortunes, heartache or smile in our success. So do me a favour and just smile right now. Not that awful fake smile for those uncomfortable photos we don’t want to be in but smile like you just can’t stop laughing.

So I’ve lasted two weeks on this fitness & food journey. I’m laughing right now. I’m snacking on almonds and I had asparagus for the first time. I do love no sugar in my teas and coffees now and I’ve cut out my beloved bread.

I just want to state on record how proud I am of anyone who has tried a small change in their life for the better. We all fail throughout different journeys. But when you tried your best and don’t succeed, you know what, you made a difference, a rewiring of thoughts. For that I salute you. You will succeed; just learn from your failures.

My auld buddy the professional footballer, said it best, reward yourself with the bad stuff because what’s the point in not enjoying food.

I was a sugar cereal man, topped with sugar and more sugar, and then wait for it, more sugar in my coffee. Now I’m buzzing off natural yogurt and blueberries. Well for the moment anyway. That’s my journey after two weeks.

Now my play ‘The Unsung Hero’ has its world premiere on March 21st at the Theatre Upstairs then a nationwide tour. You’ve witnessed this journey. It all started with a vision, that I would write a play that will tour the globe. I was laughed at, rejected, but now, I can’t stop smiling. Lights will guide you home as they say. Right now I’m living Lightning Positivity.

If I can’t give you examples from my own success or failures there is no point in me writing this? My play has been in development for two years and now I’m at the starting line of a marathon, done all the prep, late nights, aching body, sore feet, now I’m smiling getting my groove for the race that is my play, my thoughts to be staged for the world to see & hear.

Now we all have that potential inside us, now I’m not high on sugar as I have my almonds and my water. But I’ll be treating myself to a nice auld pint of stout mid-week but right now I’m just so happy. Why write this article each week?

Well, I hope that one day you’ll have a day of extreme satisfaction from visualising a goal from a blank page when everybody rejected your idea or business plan.

Small steps, big dreams and don’t forget that smile.

Pain and suffering but worth it all in the end.

You all have the potential. Get that blank page and let your imagination run wild.

I believe in you.

Just stop making excuses.

Write me four lines that’s all I want. Just four lines of a vision or a change you want to make.

essential oils, stress, allergies, headaches, anxiety, natural health, holistic health, essential health, caroline jackman, alison canavan, be complete, lavender essential oilOne of the most popular essential oils used around the world, people often associate Lavender with aiding a good night sleep. A wonderfully calming blend, Lavender’s antidepressant, soothing and antibacterial properties make it an incredibly versatile essential oil with a multitude of practical uses in the home. Here are my top 10 suggestions for using Lavender:

  1. Sleep

Lavender is the first oil I recommend using on children who struggle to wind down or sleep through the night. Diffusing a drop or two of lavender in their room at night is a practical way for them to benefit from the relaxing effects. Diluting lavender and rubbing it on the soles of the feet is another good application method. Add a drop to an adult’s pillow or inhale deeply to promote restful sleep.

  1. Allergies

Hay fever and allergies can interfere with everyday life and stop people from taking part in activities outdoors. A natural and effective way to help avoid the irritating symptoms of allergies is to take lavender internally with lemon & peppermint. Add a few drops of each to water or place in a veggie capsule and consume internally. Easy & natural routine to use in the springtime!

  1. Soak away stress

More than ever we’re suffering from high levels of stress and the demands of balancing stressful jobs with busy home lives. Placing a few drops of lavender in the palm of the hands and inhaling deeply, or rubbing some on the back of the neck is a good technique to use to keep stress levels down. For adults in need of a good relaxation routine, mixing a few drops of lavender with Epsom salts and soaking in the bath is a great way to benefit from the relaxing properties of the oil.

  1. Room Freshener

Lavender is a sweet smell that many people have positive associations with. Instead of using chemical air fresheners, freshen up a room by spritzing a mix of lavender & water or adding a few drops to a diffuser. Add lavender to a cotton ball and place it at the bottom of the bin or a jar in the bathroom to get rid of nasty smells.

  1. Burns

Whether it’s a burn from the cooker or from sitting in the sun, Lavenders analgesic & soothing properties can provide a welcome relief. Applying it topically to the area can help the skin to heal and at the same time calm and ease the pain.

  1. Earache

Earache, temperature and sick feelings that often come with them are distressing especially for children. Warming lavender ever so slightly, mixing it with a carrier oil and applying it around the ear (never inside the ear) can help relieve the feelings associated with earache.

  1. Cuts & Scrapes

Create a bottle of ‘magic spray’ as first aid for when children cut or scrape elbows and knees. Mix with some carrier oil in a glass spray bottle for a handy way to apply to grazes in awkward places. Lavenders disinfecting properties will help keep the area clean and soothe the skin.

  1. Headaches & Migraines

Apply some lavender to your temples and the back of your neck for a regenerative effect. Inhale from the bottle or palm of hands at the first sign of a headache.

  1. Insect Bites

Use lavender to repel insects and creepy crawlies by spritzing around windows & doors or diffusing. If you’re unlucky enough to be bitten, applying lavender topically can help to sooth the bite and reduce the inflammation and itchy sensation.

  1. Anxiety

Apply lavender topically on the back of the neck and over your heart before situations that can induce anxiety. Avoid the chemicals in perfume and apply lavender around the neck to smell great and help with emotional balance.

When selecting essential oils it’s important to choose 100% pure essential oils for the safest and most effective health benefits. Only certified pure therapeutic grade oils should be taken internally or used neat on the skin. Always dilute essential oils with carrier oil if applying topically to children.

Essential oils can be used aromatically to affect mood and open airways; topically for quick absorption into the body through the skin, and internally for immune & digestive support.

NO POTATOES, BREAD OR SUGAR FOR ME – BOO HOO

Howaya, don’t worry I’m not one of those fitness fanatics. But one of my friends is getting married in March. He wants to shift some weight for the big day. One of the grooms men is a professional footballer so he’s done up a two month plan of attack to get us in shape for the big day.

So I decided to join in for the craic, that means no bread, sugar in my tea or coffee and NO potatoes. I’m a meat & potato kinda guy. So let’s see if I can still be positive over the next few weeks till I get my potato.

But in life a positive shock to the system in always a good thing. Sometimes we can fall into a pattern of a safety net, which is cool but sometimes we have to get out of our comfort zone.

I’m trying to rewire my own programming with a new mind-set to stay focused on my own journey. Reminding myself in the morning that I am talented, that I can achieve the goals I’ve set out and I congratulate myself every day. I’ve noticed a difference and I can personally feel the change in me.

I’m more focused than I have ever been. Try it out; you’ve got nothing to lose unless you are saying it to yourself in the car while stuck in traffic and both cars either side of you are thinking who is this crazy coconut.

Ah don’t mind people who slag off your Positive attitude, or what books you read. I’ve had enough negative Neds tell me so. And you know what? I don’t care and I never will if people get me or don’t. My life, my choices, my belief. I believe in the power of Lightning Positivity.

Now I just hope I don’t dream of sugar and my beloved potatoes this week as I have to wait two weeks before I can bite one.

Happy Friday Peeps

essential health, essential oils, detox, caroline jackman, alison canavan, be complete, health and wellness, holistic health, juniper, lemon, grapefruit, detoxing, body careAt the start of the year we are often bombarded with cleanse and detox programmes. People don’t often think of detoxing as something we can do easily and on a daily basis without embarking on a strict regime. When we rid the body of toxins we feel more energised and our body performs its functions more efficiently. Cleaning up your diet is the most helpful thing you can do to decrease the toxic load on your system and essential oils can help support the detox process. Selecting specific oils can help to release toxins from fat cells and can also help with balancing gut bacteria for healthy digestion.

Here are some of the top 5 oils for detoxing

  1. Lemon

One of my favourite and most refreshing essential oils, lemon has so many day to day practical uses. Adding a drop or 2 of lemon oil to your water daily can help with lymphatic cleansing and detoxing. It is also helpful to take internally when suffering from heartburn and reflux. Inhaling it and applying it topically like a perfume will help with emotional balance and is incredibly uplifting.

  1. Grapefruit

Grapefruit essential oil is ideal for cleansing and helping to improve kidney function when taken internally. It is a good choice for supporting the body to detox and also assists the digestive system. Adding grapefruit to water or rubbing it on the soles of the feet aids an overall body detox. It is known to help combat sugar cravings so is also useful at a time when you’re trying to avoid adding sugar and toxins to the body.

  1. Lemongrass

Lemongrass is a wonderful purifier with anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. It is useful for digestive issues & mixes well with peppermint. Taking lemongrass oil internally can help to flush toxins out of the body and it supports the liver, kidneys, digestive tract and bladder.

  1. Rosemary

Rosemary essential oil helps with digestive complaints and is also a great detoxifier. It supports the gallbladder and liver function, organs which are important for eliminating toxins from the body.

  1. Juniper Berry

Juniper Berry essential oil is known for its detoxing properties. Taken internally it helps with cleansing, supporting the liver and assisting with elimination of toxins. Applying it topically or taking it in a capsule is also a good way to improve urinary health and avoid water retention.

Top tip: Start your day with 1-2 drops of lemon or Grapefruit essential oil in a glass of water to help your body detox in an easy and natural way.

When I baked this bread, I left it sit aside until it had fully cooled. It’s perfect for re-heating or eating cool and still tastes just as delicious when reheated 3 days later!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup buckwheat flour gluten free
  • 1 cup wholemeal spelt gluten free
  • 2 eggs separated
  • 5 bananas – 4 mashed & 1 whole
  • 1tsp vanilla powder or essence
  • 1/2cup coconut sugar
  • 12 big medjool dates
  • 1/2 cup dairy free milk – I used coconut

Method

  1. Preheat oven 190ºC
  2. Whisk egg whites till stiff (this avoids using baking powder).
  3. Add all other ingredients into blender except the whole banana. Blend until completely smooth with no bits (especially from the dates).
  4. Fold in the egg whites.
  5. Pour into baking tin (lined or greased).
  6. Slice the banana left and place on top. Glaze with a little honey.
